KEREA and CEN-CENELEC Strengthen Collaboration on Microgrids and Energy Resilience

Mombasa, Kenya | 31 July 2026

The Kenya Renewable Energy Association (KEREA), in collaboration with the European standards organisations CEN and CENELEC, convened a workshop on 31 July 2026 at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa in Mombasa. The workshop focused on the role of standards in supporting electronic microgrids and strengthening energy resilience in Kenya.

Held under the theme “Electronic Microgrids and Energy Resilience,” the event formed part of ongoing collaboration between European and African standards organisations. It brought together stakeholders to exchange perspectives on how common standards can support the development, deployment and reliable operation of microgrid systems.

Promoting Reliable and Resilient Microgrid Systems

Microgrids are an important part of the evolving energy landscape, offering opportunities to improve electricity access, integrate renewable energy sources and strengthen the reliability of local power systems. Their effective deployment depends not only on technology, but also on appropriate technical standards, safety requirements and consistent approaches to system design and operation.

The workshop provided a platform for discussions on how standards can help address these considerations and support the development of dependable microgrid solutions in Kenya.

As renewable energy technologies continue to advance, establishing clear and consistent standards can help improve system compatibility, support quality assurance and build confidence among developers, investors, service providers and energy users.

The Importance of Standards in Renewable Energy Development

Standards play a critical role in ensuring that energy technologies meet established requirements for quality, safety, performance and interoperability. For microgrid systems, harmonised standards can help create a more consistent framework for integrating different technologies and components while supporting reliable operation.

Collaboration between standards organisations across regions also creates opportunities to exchange technical knowledge, share experiences and identify approaches that can be adapted to local market conditions.

Through engagement between African and European stakeholders, initiatives of this nature can contribute to stronger technical cooperation and support the continued development of renewable energy infrastructure.

Strengthening Collaboration Across the Energy Sector

The workshop underscored the value of bringing together standards organisations and renewable energy stakeholders to discuss shared challenges and opportunities. Such engagement can help strengthen understanding of the relationship between technical standards, energy resilience and the wider development of renewable energy markets.

For Kenya, continued dialogue on microgrids and standards is relevant to efforts to develop reliable energy systems that can accommodate renewable energy technologies and respond to diverse electricity needs.

KEREA remains committed to supporting collaboration, knowledge exchange and industry engagement that contribute to the growth of Kenya’s renewable energy sector.

A Shared Commitment to Energy Resilience

KEREA extends its appreciation to CEN and CENELEC for their collaboration and to all participants who contributed to the workshop.

By strengthening dialogue on standards and microgrid development, the workshop represented an opportunity to advance cooperation between European and African standards organisations and support discussions on reliable, resilient energy systems.

Continued collaboration among industry associations, standards bodies and other stakeholders will remain important in supporting the adoption of appropriate standards and the sustainable development of renewable energy solutions in Kenya.
